Congratulations to
Walter F. Joynt!


In partnership with the Veterans Coordination Commission, we are pleased to present the July, 2005 Veteran of the Month to Walter F. Joynt.

Walter, a native of Dexter, New York, joined the United States Army in October 1945 and retired on October 31, 1973, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Walter served in the Army Air Corps Branch of the Army and continued service in the United States Air Force after it was established in 1947. He served his country for twenty-eight years of which nineteen were served in overseas locations. Walter served as a radio operator and air craft controller.

Walter’s decorations, medals and ribbons are varied, having been awarded the WWII Victory Medal, three Air Force Commendation Medals with clusters, four Air Force Outstanding Unit awards, the Korean Service Medal with five campaign stars, the Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars and the Army-Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five clusters. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Longevity Service Award ribbon.

Walter has continued to serve his country and community as an advocate for veterans. He is a life member of the VFW Post in Rapid City having served as commander in the past. He was elected the SD State VFW Commander in 1999-2000. Walter is a life member of the American Legion, Disabled American Vets, Non-Commissioned Officers Association, Air Force Sergeants Association, Korean War Vets Association and the Retired Enlisted Association. Walter volunteers numerous hours with three different Honor Guards and serves with pride as a member of the SD Veterans Cemetery Support Council. He is an active participant in the Avenue of Flags project at the BH National Cemetery and through his determination brought this project to a reality.
