January's Citizen of the Month is an individual who has, for the past two years, given unselfishly of her time to the development of a therapeutic horse program. We are pleased to present this Citizen of the Month award to Teresa Geraets. Teresa and her husband Raphael have three children - one of whom is autistic, which is how she became involved with SunCatcher Therapeutic Riding Academy. Teresa has been active in the Autism Society and Special Olympics, and now has turned her energies toward SunCatcher. This past year she has devoted numerous hours towards helping this program grow, volunteering in the arena, in the stables and at every special event, as well as behind the scenes. Teresa recently has taken an active part in public relations and fund-raising for the academy. This non-profit organization utilizes a trained team of horses, instructors and volunteers, working within the framework of a coordinated team of professionals, to carry out their mission of providing a comprehensive equine therapy program for children, teens and adults with disabilities and/or special needs. Linda Smedshammer who nominated Teresa states "Her passion for the program and her testimony on behalf of her daughter's progress since enrolling in this special program, make her a compelling asset to the program. Teresa has done all this with enthusiasm, good humor and reliability. Were it not for people like Teresa, this program would not be growing to serve the needs of our special riders." Teresa has volunteered her time, her talents, her passion and her enthusiasm, without compensation - except for the reward of the smile of that special participant. Teresa and her husband, Raphael moved to Rapid City six years ago from Custer. They have three children; Chardinai, Lacey and Lance. In addition to home-schooling her daughter, Teresa is an active member of First Christian Church helping with the church library and bulletin board. |
