|CALEA Accreditation Team|
Accredited status represents a significant achievement, recognizing that an institution meets or exceeds general expectations of quality in the field. Accreditation acknowledges the use of policies that are both conceptually sound and operationally effective.
The Rapid City Police Department continues to be an active member of the Rocky Mountain Accreditation Network (RMAN). The department’s membership in RMAN supports the concept of accreditation as a means to enhance the quality of law enforcement service in the Rocky Mountain Region. RMAN affiliation also provides a vehicle to encourage communication, mutual cooperation, development and sharing of valuable resources. The Rapid City Police Department supports the concept of accreditation and actively participates in on-site CALEA assessments and MOCK assessments.
The Rapid City Police Department completed an on-site assessment in March 2013 to verify the Department meets the professional standards administered by CALEA. The accreditation process requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. The team of on-site assessors reported their recommendations to the Commission, which is responsible for the final determination on accreditation. In July 2013, the RCPD received our 8th accreditation award (7th re-accreditation).
Accredited status is granted for a three-year period, during which time the department must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with CALEA standards. Our next on-site assessment will take place in 2016.
