Engine 1 at fuel spillThe morning of February 18, 2012 at 10:25 the Rapid City Fire Department responded to a diesel fuel spill at Big D at the intersection of E. Omaha and Maple.  A delivery truck was transferring fuel to an underground tank when a spill occurred.  Our units along with the Haz-Mat team responded.  Fuel was mostly contained to the area, with some run off making it into the storm drain.  We used absorbent  on the scene to reduce the run off.  The Haz-Mat team has placed booms across rapid creek to absorb and monitor any of the fuel that makes its way into Rapid Creek.  Both the Street and Water Departments were called in to help clean up the fuel soaked absorbent.

We would just like to say thank you to both the Water and Street divisions for their assistance.  These types of incidents not only pose an immediate threat with fuel on the ground, but have the potential to have environmental impacts as well.  Without the help today from our other city divisions this incident could easily have created a long term impact costing our community a great deal more than just picking up spilled fuel.
