All outdoor burning is prohibited, to include outdoor appliances such as chimineas, fire places, recreational fires, fire pits, etc., when the Grassland Fire Danger Index rating is Very High or Extreme, as declared by the National Weather Service. The ban is automatically suspended when the Fire Danger Index is below the Very High category, and again enacted upon the elevation to Very High or greater.Typical cooking appliances such as LP gas fire appliances remain acceptable during a ban.

On the map on the website, Pennington County is separated by a curved line. Rapid City is in the Pennington County section to the West of the curved line and to the East of the Black Hills National Forest.
